Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[Music] know yourself be self aware check your feelings show you care manage actions keep your cool reach your goals follow the rules see a friend understand their view share a smile that's what we do make good choices think it through make good choices think it did you know that Michigan is sing to people from all over the world each bringing their own special Traditions foods and stories greetings friends I'm M Arnell your 21st century skills coach what are 21st century skills 21st century skills are the skills and knowledge you need to do well be happy and keep learning in school and in life and today we're going to explore and learn why it's important to understand other cultures and have the skill of cultural awareness are you ready all about future captains and World citizens imagine Michigan as a colorful painting each brush stroke representing a different culture from the colorful murals in Detroit telling stories of African-American history the yummy smells from a middle eastern bakery in deborn and the Lively sounds of a Polish poer Festival in Cedar these are just a few examples of the many cultures that make up our state Michigan is also among the top 10 states with the largest Native American populations by learning about these cultures we become more aware and respectful of others making us culturally aware what is cultural awareness cultural awareness means appreciating the different ways people live and celebrate it's about understanding how our backgrounds shape our views and how we interact with others in Michigan where we live with people from all over the world being culturally aware helps us be kind and respectful neighbors making us better friends and World citizens five ways to be culturally aware respect different languages if someone speaks a different language than you be patient and kind try new foods with an open mind trying foods from different cultures can be fun even if you don't like it be polite and appreciate the effort celebrate different Traditions learn about holidays and traditions from other cultures and enjoy the different ways people celebrate important events ask questions and listen if you're curious about someone's culture ask respectful questions like can you tell me about a special holiday you celebrate or can you teach me a word in your language and listen carefully it's a great way to learn and make new friends stand up against bullying if you see someone being teased because of their culture take action speak up sit with them at lunch or include them in your games and activities if necessary or safety is ever at risk tell a trusted adult so they can help everyone deserves to feel love and accepted all right friends it's Journal Quest time your mission this week learn one new thing about a culture different from your own here are some ideas learn a few words or phrases in another language discover a traditional dish from another culture explore a holiday or Festival find out about a type of music or dance learn about traditional clothing write about what you learned in your journals by learning about other cultures and being cultural aware we make our communities happier and more welcoming places thank you for spending this time with us until our next adventure we will close with a song by Miss Melody Jones entitled be there for each other help your family and Community check on your neighbor see what they need build trust in unity because we have to be there for each other stop Brea life is more it seems we must all agree we have to be there for each other [Music]
