Hello there!
Right now we're live on TV on WGBU, and our show is designed for you to play along with us on many of the things that we will be doing, and some of you are registered at our custom-made play-at-home interface.
So you'll notice that there will be viewer ideas brought in during part of the show in real time.
When they registered, they were given an animal and a color to represent them.
So, all of us are gonna play together and some of your ideas will be shown right in the show.
The show is better because of our collaboration.
Okay, let's get going.
I gotta bring in Jim, my human intelligence.
Hey, Jim.
Story The Library Cat!
- Yeah, I got Story The Library Cat with me today, which is fun, she was just- - Hi, Story!
- Hi, friends.
- In the neighborhood, I guess.
- I love it, I love it!
Oh, man, so Jim, this is a fun show about owls and here's our question.
If you could be an owl, in one way, what would you choose?
Story, what do you think?
- Like an owl.
- I would like to fly like an owl so I can catch birds easier.
- Good one.
I think I would like to, you know, they have a head that can pretty much be on a swivel.
It can go like all the way around.
I think I'd like to do that 'cause not... You can kinda do that too, Wimee.
I was gonna say not all- - I'm kinda owl-like.
- Not a lot of people can do that.
Yeah, I think it'd be a pretty cool skill.
Yeah, you've got that one down already.
Thank you, I think.
- What would you be, Wimee?
- Let me see, I think I would want to have don't they have like really good night vision?
- They do.
Yeah.
That's good one.
- I think I would want night vision.
- Yeah, I like it.
- Ooh, I want spider sense.
I want to be able to find things.
Let me see.
Orange.
There's our question.
Oh, Orange Duck.
I would like to be able to see in the dark.
Yes, that's what I was thinking too.
Orange Duck and me we want to see in the dark.
Pink Ostrich, "I'd like to be able to silently swoop around."
(Wimee whooshing) I got silenter.
Wait, that's not a word.
Quieter.
Okay, Teal Starfish.
"I would like to be able to see in the dark!"
Yes, "I would like to move my head all around and see behind me."
Right.
Gonna try again.
That's as far as I go.
How far can you go?
Be careful though.
Oh, "Being able to fly."
Lots of us wanna fly.
Man, owls can do all of this.
They can fly, they can see really well in the dark, they can turn their head around.
They can't go all the way, but it feels like that.
Hey friends, let's get singing.

What's the favorite animal?
For example, I'll start with the owl.

Okay, let me think.

Jim, Story, does a polar bear say (growls) like roar?
- [Jim] Yeah, I think they growl.
Okay, a growl.
Okay.
Oh, nice.
Okay, here we go.
And where would they be?
They would be in the mountains?
- [Jim] In the snow I think.
- In the snow.
Yes, okay.

Let's put the dog in the yard.

Yeah.

♪ Duck in the pond says quack, quack, quack ♪ ♪ Duck In the pound I keep saying pound, it's a pond.
♪ Duck in the pond says quack, quack, quack ♪ Hey Jim, Story, this is tricky.

Okay, turtle.
Oh man.
Turtle sounds.
You got one Jim, Story?
Turtle sound.
(Jim imitates turtle hissing) Okay, wait, oh, I heard it.
At first I thought you were like- - [Jim] They're very slow.
- I thought there was like a thinking sound.
You're like, hmm.
Oh yeah.
Okay, okay.
And is the turtle also in the pond by the duck?
- [Jim] Sure.
Right on.
- Okay.
♪ Turtle in the pond says (hisses softly) ♪ ♪ Turtle in the pond says (hisses softly) ♪ ♪ Turtle in the pond says (hisses softly) ♪ ♪ That's a sound a turtle makes ♪ Friends, later on, keep singing the song.
See what other animals and sounds you come up with and teach the song to your friends.
Now you know the song so share it with your friends.
Okay, let's find out what Moby's gonna say today.
(upbeat music) (Moby imitates owl hooting) - Did you know that owls wake up at night and sleep during the day?
I learned that owls have super hearing and supervision that help them get around in the dark.
Wow, owls also have special feathers that help them stay quiet when they fly.
So cool.
Owls sound like superheroes.
I wonder, do they need a chicken on their team?
(upbeat music) - Yes, indeed they could use a chicken on their team.
Jim and Story, I didn't know that owls also have super hearing.
- [Jim] No, I didn't either.
Or that they've got wings that are like super silent wings.
How cool is that?
- Super silent wings.
Man, this is a great episode.
They're all great episodes, and it's so fun because we get to play together.
So let's keep going, let's create.
It's time for today's one, two, three sentence story.
Beginning, middle, end.
Let's write a story, friends.
In the first sentence, we set the scene, in the second sentence, there's a problem.
(cries) But don't worry because in the third sentence comes a solution.
Share a person, place, or thing.
That's how we'll start the story.
We never know where it's gonna take us.
Oh man, I got my human intelligence and my cat intelligence with me.
Okay, orange duck says barn.
Okay, we're gonna start our story.
It's got something to do with a barn, okay.
Hey Story, I know sometimes cats enjoy barns.
Do you have any insight to begin our first sentence, Story?
- [Story] Yeah, I think it was a lovely afternoon and the cat was lounging around in the barn.
- It's perfect!
Perfect!
I can see it now.
The cat is just lounging around in the barn having a nice time, but oh no, there's a problem!
Oh no.
There we are.
There's the barn, there's the cat.
Toothbrush.
Oh no, I know the problem.
Okay, it was a lovely afternoon, and I- Wait, whose cat is it?
Should we add that detail?
Do we know the name of the cat?
- [Story] I like the name Story.
- Oh, is it you?
This could be a story about you!
Okay, okay, so it was a lovely afternoon and Story was lounging around in the barn.
She realized she forgot to brush her teeth this morning!
No!
How do we solve this problem, Story?
You didn't brush your teeth.
Wait, wait a minute.
(laughs) Do cats brush their teeth?
I guess so.
- Cats with good hygiene do.
- Yes, that's a good point, good point.
So friends, how do we solve this?
The simple problem is Story didn't brush her teeth this morning.
Oh no!
Let's get down to the options here.
It could be lots of things, but our friends at home on the play at home interface.
By the way, all of you watching, share with a friend or family, or write it down, brainstorm together.
How do we solve this problem?
Feathers.
Okay.
Jim, cat, Story, anything?
- [Story] Maybe I used feathers to floss my teeth.
- Yeah, okay, I got it.
Okay, thanks.
Okay, from the top.
It was a lovely afternoon and Story was lounging around in the barn.
She realized she forgot to brush her teeth.
Luckily, a duck feather floated down and Story realized I could floss my teeth with this.
There's the duck, quack, quack.
♪ Quack in the barn says quack, quack, quack ♪ ♪ Duck in the barn says We can take the song and totally bring this.
Oh my God, the duck is on top of the shed, or like the garage awning.
That's where it fell down from.
Hmm, I wonder if there's some toothpaste left in the barn anywhere that you could not only floss your teeth, but then brush your teeth with it.
I'm just thinking out loud.
Friends, Story, Jim, thanks for helping.

Friends, let's find out how to say the word owl in six different languages.
(puppet imitates owl hooting) - Today's word is owl.
- In Spanish, owl is buho.

- In Swahili, owl is bundi.
Bundi.
- Owl in Ukrainian is coba.
Coba.
- Owl in Arabic is (speaks Arabic).
- In American sign language, owl is signed like this.
Owl.
- In Haitian Creole, owl is chwet.
Chwet.
- I love it.
I love learning from my friends.
Yeah, Jim, Story, any one of those words, the languages stand out to you today?
- [Jim] The one, I think was coba, right?
- Yeah.
- [Jim] And I always loved the ASL.
That one was great too.
- Let's practice.
(Wimee imitates owl hooting) Yeah.
Nice.
Well, hey friends, guess what?
We get to go to the zoo.
We're gonna learn!
Oh my, oh man, I can't wait.
Okay, it's time for, we are going to the zoo.
♪ We're going to the zoo with all our friends ♪ ♪ And when we're there we're gonna see a snowy owl ♪ - Hi, Amanda.
- Why, hello.
- Oh man, we are right by the snowy owl, right?
- We are indeed.
- Teach us.
What is technically a snowy owl?
- A snowy owl is a specialized owl that they're the only ones that pretty much look all white.
So our snowy owls, we have Xenon and Keone.
It's a male and a female.
Xenon's are male, and you're gonna actually see that he's almost all white.
There's barely any black spots on him, and that's a typical male feature.
- Nice.
- And then the female, Keone, she is gonna have those bars on her wings and her back, and that's what females or young snowy owls look like.
These guys are a little bit different.
They like to nest on the ground rather than in trees.
- Wow.
- But like any owl, they have those big eyes.
They're very yellow, I'm sure you can see.
And since their eyes are so big, much like your eyes.
- Yeah.
- You can't really look around.
You gotta move your head, right?
Yeah, the owls they can rotate their head so much further than a human can.
They can go almost 270 degrees around.
- It is amazing.
Like, no other animal can move their head that far, right?
- Not really.
Just owls.
That's a special thing of owls because they probably will hunt at night 'cause they need those big eyes to get that night vision so they can see, and then they have special feathers.
So birds have pretty cool adaptations.
So for the snowy owls at the end of their feathers, it's very downy and very fuzzy.
So there's gonna be fuzzy looking feathers at the end which allows them to move very silently through the air.
You will not hear them fly.
Whereas normal bird, they have crisp wings, it's very aerodynamic and it catches and makes a lot of noise when they're flapping their wings.
- Wow.
The owls that you have here, you were telling me that they have been injured in the past.
- They have.
So, a lot of our birds that are a bird of prey is what we call them.
That just means they'll eat other animals rather than fruits or seeds.
- Okay.
- Okay.
So we get them from the wild, and a special reason is because they'll become injured and then that way they can't fly properly or catch their food properly.
So zoos and sanctuaries will take them in and we're able to care for them.
- Gotcha.
- Yeah.
- So these owls, because they're here you're helping them at a second chance on surviving.
- Right.
- Nice.
- And then everybody gets to learn about 'em like you.
- Oh, that is so cool.
Now our friends watching get to learn.
- Exactly.
- Wow, Amanda, this is so wonderful learning about snowy owls.

Hey Jim and Story, how about if I quiz you on what we saw?
- Uh-oh.
Okay.
- Uh-oh.
I'm putting you on the spot.
Okay, first question.
Where do snowy owls nest?
On trees up above or on the ground below?
- [Jim] On the ground.
It's pretty cool.
- Yes!
I found that fascinating.
And then one more question.
How many degrees can snowy owls turn their neck around?
- [Story] About 270.
- Yeah, totally got it, Story!
Is there anything that stood out to either of you?
- [Jim] No.
Again, I was impressed.
I didn't know that they had these stealthy feathers where you can't hear them.
That's what Moby told us too.
I never knew that before.
They're just so soft, and man, amazing, amazing.
Okay, friends, guess what?
We're gonna find out what joke Siblee's got for us now.
(kids laughing) - Okay.
Okay.
So why did the owl invite his friends over?
- [Audience] Why did the owl invite his friends over?
- Because he didn't want to be owl by himself.
(audience and Siblee laughing) - It's time now for slowing down.
(gentle calm music) Hey, let's play another game.
It's time for the alphabet game.

Most of you so far have said orange because that's the the biggest word.
If you see a word you like and you type it, then we know that's becoming.

(upbeat music) - The title of this amazing and wonderful story that you will not want to miss is called "Oliver The Curious Owl", and it is such a delightful story and it's all about asking important questions, and I know you're being drawn in to this book because of those amazing, wonderful wide eyes, which promise that there are answers to the questions.
So who, what, when, where, and why, as well as the curious little owl Oliver who asked them and the adventures he and his best friend Bug go on as they explore the world around them is how this book is designed.
And starts out with the family, and it ends up with adventures and a little bit of a mystery, and maybe getting lost on the way, but definitely finding the answers to all those important questions.
So pick this up and check it out, and enjoy finding the answers to the who, the what, the when, and where, and why.

Hey, Jim and Story, I noticed as I was looking at the cover where Oliver with those big eyes, I noticed on top of Oliver a little character.
Did you see that little character?
- [Jim] I did.
I thought maybe it was a bug.
What'd you think?
- [Story] Yeah, I think it's his friend Bug.
- Yeah, 'cause then Joanne said that and I was like, yes!
I saw that bug and Joanne mentioned it.
I'm curious now to find out more about that little bug.
- [Jim] The illustrations were really cool.
- Yeah, those big eyes.
It reminded me of the barn owl.
Wait, no, not barn owl.
I was thinking of the barn from our story.
The snowy owl, right?
Did you see when the eyes were so big and bright of the one they showed?
Yep.
Man, that's so cool.
Okay, friends, let's check back with the Wimage Board and see what's been developing.

- [Story] Oh, I love it.
- Morning stories, afternoon stories, nighttime stories.
A day in the life of Story each and every day.
Oh man, fun stuff.
Hey friends, it's time for another game.
Let's play Find it Fast.
(upbeat rock music) (graphics whooshing) Friends, can you find one, two, three, all three.
First, something that starts with the letter O.
We came up with some great ideas in our alphabet game.
Can you find something round?
Those eyes of an owl.
They're so bright and round, and find something you use at night.
Hey Jim and Story, have you found anything?
- We have.
I found this really cool owl, and look.
They've got that 270 neck.
And also, it's a good thing Ive been working out 'cause I found this mill stone.
- What?
- It's round.
Oh geez!
- Wow, where did you find a millstone?
- Story, what did you find?
- Oh, I found a midnight snack.
- Oh no!
(laughs) - Just kidding.
It's a stuffed animal.
- Wait, was that owl a puppet or a living owl?
- [Jim] That was a puppet.
- I thought so.
It looked so realistic.
Okay, orange starts with O.
Nice.
Something round, something you use at night.
Ooh, oval starts with O.
The sun is round.
Use a fan at night.
Nice.
So great.
So many possibilities.
Olive, clock, blanket, a flashlight.
Indeed, looking around in the dark, got a flashlight.
Ooh, a flashlight.
That can be round too, the bulb in the front.
Orange starts with O. Orange is something round in a blanket.
Yeah, we had a couple people say blankets.
That's so cool.
And a flashlight.
We have some similar things.
I love it.
We find unique things, we find similar things.
Orange, a ball, a flashlight, an orange.
Oh man, I'm getting hungry for an orange now.
And that was one of our biggest word, the most popular word in the board.
So many good actions.
