Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshiphi Scholars have you ever heard of the interstate 496 freeway I'm Mrs mass and I live in Lancing so I know all about I 496 but if you don't live in the Lancing area it might be new to you I 496 goes through the middle of Lancing Michigan's capital and connects to i96 the main freeway between Detroit and Grand rapit although this is a convenient road to travel between major Michigan cities there there was a cost to its construction beside money and that is the homes and businesses of many African-Americans in the Lancing area one opinion is that the building of the I 496 freeway was unfair to many African-American people it's important to have facts that support opinions firsthand accounts or narratives can be a great source of them first let's go over a few words that will be very important to know entrepreneur that's a person who takes the risk of starting their own business or company displaced to be forced to leave your home or business financing raising money commercialized when something changes from its original purpose to be more about business now let's hear from Bobby husband a business owner who personally experienced the building of the I 496 fre freeway while Mr Husband shares his firstperson account please listen for details factual examples that support the opinion that the building of I 496 freeway was unfair to many African-American people we were in business uh I'm out of Barber Shop on buler Street long timeo but in that barber shop upstairs out upstairs Barb Shop Dallas day be made into a restaurant called Barbecue Pit oh yeah about P yeah okay that was my me and my brother's own thing yeah what you're right and we had that going on we knew we had to move from uh there on St Joseph to go to the highway and we we worked at we worked at restaurant and uh we didn't take any money for ourselves we just saved all the money and uh so we had uh went down to City Planning and as the city planning we s some houses that may be s on the north side of St Jo uh near the Sycamore area uh and ask them verbally uh would it be how hard would it be to get this area commercialized uh for for business cuz we don't be up booted by by the how right and said it wouldn't be they be any problem so anyway uh uh we uh saved all our money and uh bought some houses there on the north side of s near Sycamore Street mhm and T down we didn't have any money if we bought we have any money to have them tore down uh by bulldozers everybody else so we had down na for nail we tore them down i s the house let you say where you were my brothers okay all right all my brothers with five brothers and we T it down to the about 3 hours we tore down and then we had a builder uh uh that was going to build this flaz for us like I'm building we had commitments from a lot of the businesses in that Corridor that would with from us once they was uprooted by the highway cuz F was down there too yeah F was up down there they had drug stor they had Highway store all got stores there you know and so we T those dolls down and we went back after tour of that we went down the city aisle to uh City get from get the mid Len to do this they they they just told us no you know why yeah I know and we were black and you were black excuse they had was that plans for the highway had been changed and there was going to be uh an exit there coming up where we had bought this prop like and the traffic would be too congested in that area to put any kind of business in in that area so they cut down they they just told us let no we couldn't do it we lost there we lost everything and I cried like a baby because we couldn't get it back where's the ex that came did it came never came but it was hard for us to uh to get in together financing and uh and the girl mother was going going to help us out but after that that's why we don't have any black business here now you can't get financing what factual examples do you hear in the video that support the opinion that building of the iPhone 96 freeway was unfair here's what I heard many African-Americans were displaced and had to move to other parts of the city of Lancing where they did not feel wanted black businesses were lost and never able to reopen which caused financial difficulties the African-American Community faced many challenges where they were forced to move which caused them to become separated were our examples similar heing a personal story is a powerful way to get information next time you're together with family or friends seek out stories to learn about your heritage
