It's my pleasure.
I'm excited to be sitting here with Orlando Bailey of Bridge Detroit, and Sande Rose, the curator for today's episode.
Hi Sande.
- Hi, how are you?
- Good.
Hi Orlando.
- Hi Satori.
I'm so excited to be able to join you.
- Dude, yes sir, yes sir.
So Sande, can you tell us how gospel music is relevant to Detroit?
- Well, the Detroit sound is unique and right outside of Chicago, Detroit has played a huge role in the proliferation of gospel music and even across the country.
And Detroit is really known for choirs and for bringing forth the king of Gospel, Reverend James Cleveland.
- Talk about your onboarding into the genre.
Was it Voices of the Tabernacle?
- It was.
- Okay.
- It was.
Thomas Whitfield, the Craig Brothers.
Anybody that you can name has come through Prayer Tabernacle Church.
And that's how we got started and we performed with them.
We've had choirs all over the city of Detroit.
- Now I know you brought some powerful, powerful people today.
- [Sande] I did.
I did.
- Can you tell us about each one of them?
- Yes.
I brought Bishop Ellis, Darius Twyman, and Kevin Stewart.
And each one of those are just dynamic in their own right.
And you gotta see them!
- And we're sitting in one of the most magnificent sanctuaries in churches in Detroit.
- Absolutely.
- Where are we?
- We are in none other than Greater Grace Temple, The City of David right here on Seven Mile and Telegraph in the beautiful city of Detroit.
- Well, thank you so much, Sande, for being with us today.
- Thank you for having me.
- All right.
- Yeah!
- So put your hands together and stomp your feet.
We're going to the stage!

- Thank you my friend.
It's a pleasure being here with you all today.
- What is Greater Grace without gospel music?
How does it continue to grow and uplift the community?
What would it be like to not have that?
- I would tell you, as somebody said, we don't need no music.
♪ We don't need no music ♪ ♪ We don't need no music ♪ Then you tell a band to stop.
They always bring 'em back in before you finish though, because we don't need any music.
But it sure makes things a lot more accommodating.
Sets the atmosphere, makes it a little easier on you when you do have some music, you know?
So I'm one to say, I wanna appreciate the music of the church.
I wanna appreciate the musicians of the church.
And I say to them all the time.
- My question for you is about the enduring legacy of gospel music, and especially here in the city of Detroit and what do you hope for in the future?
- I would hope that Detroit would continue to be a beacon of gospel music in this industry and in this time.
I know LA is going to, they're gonna claim theirs.
And Chicago's gonna claim its, and Atlanta's gonna claim its, but Detroit had more community choirs and church choirs that really had the sound and had the quality to perform nationally and as we call it, on wax, on albums.
So I would hope that one of the legacies would be whenever you talk about gospel music, Detroit always comes up.
I would like for it to come up first.
If not, it's gotta be in the top three.
- Thank you so much, Bishop Ellis.
- Thank you for having me.
And I would pray that Greater Grace has accommodated you all and made you feel at home.

We're sitting here with Kevin Stewart, gospel singer extraordinaire.
- Thank you.
- Did you write that?
- Yes.
I actually wrote it seven years before we actually recorded it.
- Okay.
And what happened seven years ago?
- So the gentleman that was on earlier, Darius Twyman, and he's like an uncle to me.
We were in a service and he basically was like, "Did you see how they reacted to you singing, "This Means War" by Charles Jenkins?"
And he said, "You need to write something like that."
And I was like, "Uh, okay."
So I wrote it, but I never put it out because I wasn't really in that vein yet musically.
But when I decided to do the live recording, that song came back to me and I was like, okay, that's gonna be the first single.
- Where did your energy and charisma come from?
- I really can't pinpoint it.
I just always had a mentality, I don't care if there's two people in the audience.
I have to convince you that the God I serve is real.
- Wow.
- So I'm gonna give it my all every time.
Because whatever I sing or say may either keep you from suicide, it may cause you to turn towards God.
Or it may even spark a thought in your mind to say, maybe I should try him.
But I never believe in half-doing anything.
- What is your dream?
- It's to always sing, to sing and preach.
To sing and preach.
But I can be totally honest with you, I don't know what this season is called.
I am literally trying to rediscover and encounter God in a different way.
- Thank you so much, Kevin Stewart.
- Thank you.
- You have been a great pleasure.
- Thank you both.
I appreciate you.
- Thank you, Orlando Bailey, you have been magnificent.
